Lynn Toler presides on the nationally syndicated show Divorce Court. She’s a published author and a regular contributor to NPR. As a teacher, I benefit from the reflections of others on how to do it better. Along with Parker Palmer, Stephen Brookfield offers much helpful guidance in this book. Not only does identifying and scrutinizing our own assumptions help us to teach better by inviting students to see the powerful influence of assumptions, but it helps us in our own research and growth as teachers. As a long time student, many professors I've had are brilliant and know a lot of information, but few are pedagogically aware and most are unable to submit their own assumptions to critical analysis. Brookfield invites us to do so and guides us on how to do so.One particular dimension of this book that has served me well as a teacher is the Critical Incident Questionnaire (CIQ). What I love about this simple, anonymous survey is that it provides clear insight into how students experience my teaching. While I can "read" a room, that is partial information. The CIQ has surprised me on numerous occasions in which I thought I was "bombing" a teaching session. At the very point that I thought I was failing, numerous students gave feedback that suggested the opposite. The CIQ alone is worth the price of the book.

This is the second Brookfield book that I have read, after starting with his revised edition of The Skillful Teacher (2015).After describing the importance of this kind of reflection, Brookfield begins by exploring myths we can subscribe to that will hinder our ability to be a critically reflective teacher. He then outlines four lenses we can use to inform our reflection: students’ perceptions, colleagues’ impressions, our own experience, and what the research tells us.Brookfield demonstrates a kind of transparently rarely conveyed in our sharing about becoming more effective in our teaching. As I read, I felt such kinship with him, as he shared his struggles of self flagellation. In my own desires to be a “great” teacher, it can seem like a lonely road.Having someone who conveys such similar challenges as my own was quite helpful, both in terms of knowing that my concerns are common, but also by providing practical ways to reflect in different ways and take actions to develop my teaching even further.This is a book I will revisit often, as a teacher and also as a faculty developer.

The first edition of this book had a big impact on me. In my own practice, I still use the lenses of critical reflection that Brookfield introduced back in 1995. Those lenses of self, students, colleagues, and theory can be used to think more critically and clearly about virtually any educational situation. But this second edition is even better. The lenses are still here, but there are also chapters on hegemony and on race that make this edition timelier and more powerful than ever.

If you are a fan of Stephen Brookfield's work, as I am, this book will not disappoint. He converts the covert into overt issues we should consider in our teaching and practice. Reflection is hard. Doing it is hard. Teaching it is hard. This book provides guidance as to what to consider and contemplate. 5 starts are well earned.

The 1st edition of this book came out in the mid-1990's so I'm glad it's been updated. Some things - such as the model of the 4 lenses on practice - are pretty much unchanged. But there are whole new chapters on team teaching, using social media backchannels and race/racism. I missed some of the 1st edition's chapters that I've used with graduate students to help them understand how to write critical reviews of literature. But this seems to have been pretty throughly revised. It seems more to the point and shorter than he previous edition. I'll keep using it in my courses and will be recommending this 2nd punchier edition to colleagues. Overall the 4 lenses model has been incredibly influential in shaping my own teaching and I love that there's so many practical techniques covered in here.

Highly recommend, although if I could give 4.999 stars instead of 5, I probably would, only because I feel like the book would be even better if it was a little bigger. If you have more than one child and want to answer the questions for both of them, you will have to write pretty small.

Hi Parents! Not that we need one. more. thing. but I really enjoy this journal. It's just a few sentences (or less). I'm really hoping I keep it going! I usually scribble a quick note during the morning craziness amongst the toys on my counter, dodging spills near my wrists, with screams of "more cereal please" as my mood music. If I miss a few day, no big deal as the questions are easy. Sometimes I look ahead so I can think on my answer while I'm going abut my day. Motherhood is hard, but I like documenting it and really like that I'll have the same questions to answer for 5 years. There are standard questions ("What's your child's favorite toy?") to ones that make me pause for a moment ("What's a good theme song for your child right now?").

Great concept. I ordered two of the Q & A a day for teens for my daughters (12 & 14 years old) and was hoping we could all write in our own Q & A books together. However, the questions in this book are geared toward the years when your kids are much younger. I suppose I could adapt the questions to fit the teen years, but it just seems so...young. I will gift it to someone with a young child and look for a more suitable book for myself. Otherwise, great, hardcover book and lovely cover. Small in size, but nicely bound.

A good little journal keepsake to pass on. Questions are good. Nice hard cover, not flimsy. Even has a ribbon bookmark so you don't have to root for your page. Yes, there was a big sticker on the back but with a little effort you can get it off and not ruin the book. Only downfall is its tiny. Barely bigger than my hand.

I love this book.I've only been writing in it for about a month but it's been really great. It asks some deep questions about motherhood and life in general. I think when my children are grown it will service as sort of a memoir for my kids.It's geared towards one child but when I read the question if it triggers an answer concerning any of my kids I might answer it based on one of the four or all four. So you can adapt the book to a multi kid household.I love how when I started the book my kids are 7,7,4,&1 and when I finish it they'll be entire different people at 12,12,9,&6. My daughter is just now starting to talk, so who knows who she or even I will be by the time she is six!Pocket size, about like your hand or a book of prayers so it doesn't take up a ton of room on the nightstand.Great way to journal without really journaling.

I got this for myself to write about my 4 children and absolutely love it. It exceeded my expectations. I've been using their Question A Day 5 year journal for a few years now, and this one is right on par with that. Great questions for any parent, not just moms, and fun to include my kids answers sometimes. I'd get this as a gift for someone.

I love this book, and I will easily be giving it as gifts in the future to any moms I know! Like a lot of people, my new year's resolution is to practice mindfulness and to write/journal more. Staring at a blank journal is intimidating, so this book makes the task fun and something I look forward to everyday. It takes less than five minutes to complete and you'll thank yourself later for completing the prompts. It says it's a journal, but I think it's also somewhat of a baby book where you can document what your kid is doing at the time and what your thoughts are. I can't wait to complete the year and answer the prompts again...I'm hoping I'll see personal growth in myself and feel some nostalgia when I read about what my daughter was doing a year ago that day!

This is perfect for the busy moms who would like to keep a journal but they just can't find the time to keep one. This is a question-a-day with enough room for 2-3 sentence answers. Very thoughtful questions (ones I wouldn't even think of answering unless I had this prompt!). This covers 5 years and so much happens in 5 years. Start at any point and just keep rolling. Takes a few minutes a day. Small enough to keep on the kitchen counter or even in a pocketbook. It will be a true keepsake.

If you sew, appreciate custom made items or are looking for inspiration, this is the book for you. Suzanne Perron leaves nothing to the imagination when it comes to gorgeous dresses and what it takes to go from a sketch to the finished dress. The only down side is that unlike the book Bridal Couture by Susan Khalje there are no how-tos. But the photographs alone are worth the price of the book.

i am a technical designer who's been wanting to broaden my skills with making lush evening and wedding gowns. i was a little hesitant about buying this book in the first place, i was under the impression that it was a technical book but the description was vague on that subject. well i got the book and while disappointed that it wasn't a technical book i still kept it because it gave good information on conducting fittings and dealing with clients. while also having pictures of the process of making the gowns. she gives out a lot of good information on the preparation, foundation, and work it takes to make these one of a kind gowns. i hope in the future the author does a technical book cause i would totally snatch that up.

This lovely book goes far beyond just pretty pictures of carnival and wedding gowns. Conception, clients, intricate construction are integral parts of this beautifully executed volume. As a bonus, our museum here currently has an exhibit of some of Ms. Perron's gowns and I was fortunate to see them 'up close and personal.' If you are a seamstress who constructs gowns of any kind, you will adore this book.

Well worth the money if your a fan of Suzanne Perron; you'll probably enjoy looking at her dresses and love this book but, in reading it, I found I'm not! I found her life story less than engaging (unusual, I'll read just about anything and I enjoy reading about crafty/artisty types) and I found her dresses quite unattractive. The section on the technical side of creating her dresses was interesting but too short to be very useful but was the only part that really held my interest.(If she ever publishes a book on the subject I'll buy it immediately.)A disappointment for me but a beautifully presented book that would probably please others very much.

this is my third fodors books review. They are all matching reviews because they are all equally good.If you are spending thousands of dollars on your trip, it is worthwhile to spend a few dollars on this excellent book and plan your trip so much better. When we plan a vacation, the first thing we ask ourselves is- what are we going to do there. Then we get on the Internet and try to make sense of what people are suggesting. This book tells you all without the hassle of browsing the internet and still not being sure of what to do. They mark interesting things with something called "Fodor's choice" and they have never disappointed.Very strongly recommended.

I reviewed Fodor's Las Vegas 2010, Frommers Las Vegas 2010, and the Unofficial Guide to Las Vegas 2010. I like Fodor's the best. Aesthetically, I liked the glossy and colorful pages. It certainly gave the best information about day trips or side trips to Las Vegas (63 full pages). A pull out map is included which is very handy. There are also maps in the book (as there are maps in the other books). If you are going to Vegas and wanting to do side or day trips I would recommend this book if you can only get one. The information it has about Vegas is much better than Frommers, although not quite as good as .The Unofficial Guide to Las Vegas 2010 (Unofficial Guides).If you are just staying in Vegas, however, the Unofficial guide has more information and more specific information about Vegas. I felt the dining section in that book was much more comprehensive. The information about shows was also more detailed.I would stay away from Frommers Guide as it has the least amount of information and it is not articulated as well as the other two.For me, because I am wanting to spend time on side trips as well as in las vegas (we have a 2 week trip planned), I am using both the Unofficial Guide as well as Fodor's.

This book has got it all-the best places to stay, eat, and visit, both on and off the strip.Very honest and thorough critics and reviews. I really like the "City Itineraries" section-some good advice if you have some time to kill. I have purchased other Fodor's books in the past, and have never been dissapointed. Thank you, Fodor's!!!

Excellent guide for Las Vegas especially for first time visitors. It gives helpful tips for lodging that fits your personal tastes, food, entertainment of all kinds, etc. Small enough to drop in a backpack but too big for a small purse. The pullout map was outdated, but the ones in the book are current.

The map that comes with the book still has several hotels that aren't even there anymore i.e. Aladdin, Westward Ho and Stardust. Geez, update your map!!!

This book is probably going to save my life. I feel totally devastated by the loss of 2 beloved cats in less than a 3 week span of time. The sudden and unexpected death of Tony (12 years old) and the expected but no less devastating loss of Meena (17 years old) to her kidney and heart disease. Tony died first and I was stunned and floored by the extreme pain of the grief and sadness ... all the while continuing intense care for Meena and knowing our time was limited. I got this book and started reading it before Meena passed & I am very thankful I did. It offers exactly what the cover says, soul comfort. In addition to that it has many practical suggestions and tons of good resources. It's a small book which is good because I couldn't deal with anything complicated right now. My grief is so intense and raw. No other loss has ever hit me like this. But this book is a big help and guide to being able to go on. I'm on my second read thru. I've got notes I took from it and some additional reading to do as I am able. I highly recommend this book.

I'm grieving from the loss of our extraordinary, loving, handsome fur baby Smokey, who died a month ago from congestive heart failure. The vets only gave him 6 months, but we had him a year with a lot of meds. I have a ton of guilt how he died, and that he was only 9 1/2 years old. I'm getting help from this book, and finding comfort that I'm not alone in my grief and feelings of guilt, regret, etc. She even talks about NDE (Near Death Experiences) which people have had that were peaceful and comforting, and they saw relatives, etc. There are too many to dismiss as coincidence and that helps me too. I believe, as she does, that animals also go to a heavenly, peaceful place, free from pain & suffering. That's comforting.Also, the fact that there isn't "closure" with pet loss - there is still contact with our beloved babies after they've passed if we're open to them. I had done some of the things she recommends already, and will continue to read this wonderful book. I got it on my e-reader, but I highly recommend it in any form.

Read this book, try some of its suggestions, and hang on...because you can and will be whole again.What I like about this book is that it's a simple, easy read, and that's what we need when our grief is fresh. Nothing too complicated, nothing too overwhelming, just something we can get our confused heads around. When you read a suggestion or idea that resonates--something that gives you that sense of a little bell going off inside you somewhere--there are plenty of suggested readings that can help you delve deep into things that will help you heal. And before you rush out to get another cat, be sure you read the section on how to know if you're ready--because it's very easy to make a mistake when your mind and heart are scrambled by loss.I speak from my own experience in all of this, having lost my soul mate kitty three years ago. This book was the life preserver that kept me afloat for months as I floundered in a sea of pain. I still miss my cat every day, and sometimes, when the tide runs too high, I turn again to the ideas in this book for stability and comfort. I continue to heal...and that healing has been greatly speeded by a recent spiritual insight in which I really understood, on a gut level, that my cat is not gone--she's still alive inside of me.I mean that literally: I believe that the absence death seems to create is an illusion, and the truth is that there is no distance or separation between us and our "lost" kitties. And that's THE most important reason why I recommend this book. Liz Eastwood takes a rare and much-needed spiritual approach to losing your cat that I found paved the way for me to understand that my relationship with my cat really is unbroken.My wish is that everyone who reads this review finds comfort after losing their own little bundle of fur-covered love--and I truly think this book can give you that, especially if there is no one in your life who gets what you're going through. So give it a try. You've got nothing to lose but your pain.

As an adult, I called two cats mine: Tripawd, my pastel calico, 3-legged hoppy girl who I said good bye to 2-1/2 years ago. And my boy, her adopted brother, Cosmo, was a Turkish angora mix, bicolor eyes, mostly white, and at his healthiest was my “17 pounds of love”. I said goodbye to him just one week ago. He was my boy, my guard kitty. He helped ease the pain of losing Tripawd...we helped each other through that grief. Now I’m truly alone in my house. They were with me through my separation and divorce, through two other relationships that failed, two huge moves, a couple of jobs...we helped each other in ways few people in my life understand. Thank you for writing this book. I will refer back to it when I’m feeling low. I miss my babies but I KNOW they are near.

We just lost Winter a week ago; our chronically-ill cat who suffered a dramatic worsening of her condition before passing away in my arms at the veterinary clinic. We had done everything we could for her for nearly a decade, and still I came away from her death blaming myself for failing her. Eastwood's book found me in that place and helped me begin to navigate it in love, in hope and with my own intuitive sense of the numinous.I would recommend this work to any person grieving the loss of a loved one, any loved one. In fact, I plan to buy a copy or two and keep them on hand to give as gifts to grieving friends.

I loved this book. I bought it after losing my sweet cat Mitten, a beloved friend and companion for over 11 years. It was one of the hardest things I have ever gone through and this book really helped me understand the enormous tornado of emotions I was going through (and continue to go through). This book also helped me to understand that I was not crazy for being as attached as I was/am to my wonderful cat, who was so much more than a pet. A truly comforting and helpful book. I recommend it to anyone who has lost a furr-friend and needs help coping with the grief process and with the overall loss.
