As a teacher, I benefit from the reflections of others on how to do it better. Along with Parker Palmer, Stephen Brookfield offers much helpful guidance in this book. Not only does identifying and scrutinizing our own assumptions help us to teach better by inviting students to see the powerful influence of assumptions, but it helps us in our own research and growth as teachers. As a long time student, many professors I've had are brilliant and know a lot of information, but few are pedagogically aware and most are unable to submit their own assumptions to critical analysis. Brookfield invites us to do so and guides us on how to do so.One particular dimension of this book that has served me well as a teacher is the Critical Incident Questionnaire (CIQ). What I love about this simple, anonymous survey is that it provides clear insight into how students experience my teaching. While I can "read" a room, that is partial information. The CIQ has surprised me on numerous occasions in which I thought I was "bombing" a teaching session. At the very point that I thought I was failing, numerous students gave feedback that suggested the opposite. The CIQ alone is worth the price of the book.

This is the second Brookfield book that I have read, after starting with his revised edition of The Skillful Teacher (2015).After describing the importance of this kind of reflection, Brookfield begins by exploring myths we can subscribe to that will hinder our ability to be a critically reflective teacher. He then outlines four lenses we can use to inform our reflection: students’ perceptions, colleagues’ impressions, our own experience, and what the research tells us.Brookfield demonstrates a kind of transparently rarely conveyed in our sharing about becoming more effective in our teaching. As I read, I felt such kinship with him, as he shared his struggles of self flagellation. In my own desires to be a “great” teacher, it can seem like a lonely road.Having someone who conveys such similar challenges as my own was quite helpful, both in terms of knowing that my concerns are common, but also by providing practical ways to reflect in different ways and take actions to develop my teaching even further.This is a book I will revisit often, as a teacher and also as a faculty developer.

The first edition of this book had a big impact on me. In my own practice, I still use the lenses of critical reflection that Brookfield introduced back in 1995. Those lenses of self, students, colleagues, and theory can be used to think more critically and clearly about virtually any educational situation. But this second edition is even better. The lenses are still here, but there are also chapters on hegemony and on race that make this edition timelier and more powerful than ever.

If you are a fan of Stephen Brookfield's work, as I am, this book will not disappoint. He converts the covert into overt issues we should consider in our teaching and practice. Reflection is hard. Doing it is hard. Teaching it is hard. This book provides guidance as to what to consider and contemplate. 5 starts are well earned.

The 1st edition of this book came out in the mid-1990's so I'm glad it's been updated. Some things - such as the model of the 4 lenses on practice - are pretty much unchanged. But there are whole new chapters on team teaching, using social media backchannels and race/racism. I missed some of the 1st edition's chapters that I've used with graduate students to help them understand how to write critical reviews of literature. But this seems to have been pretty throughly revised. It seems more to the point and shorter than he previous edition. I'll keep using it in my courses and will be recommending this 2nd punchier edition to colleagues. Overall the 4 lenses model has been incredibly influential in shaping my own teaching and I love that there's so many practical techniques covered in here.

I’d give it less stars if I could.

Very easy to use. Am able to place two cards in one sleeve. Love that half are vertical opening and half are horizontal opening for the credit cards.
