As a passenger on this flight, we (my wife and I) eagerly awaited for the publication to arrive. Emilio Corsetti has done a masterful and thorough job in his investigation. And the explanations we received in our conversations with Pilot Hoot Gibson, the authors description parallels what we were told. This is a great read. Particularly if your into airplane challenges. We are continually amazed that as this malfunction has happened in a number of models in the Boeing line, we also find it disheartening that the NTSB and Boeing refuse to exonerate the pilots. A great read. EnjoyPat/Floyd CarlsonSeat 1a &b

I have followed this accident since I was a young pilot when it occurred, and this book is a fascinating retelling of the story. It is extremely sympathetic to the captain, but I think anyone needs to consider whether the captain has any integrity with which to speak. Just consider the cockpit voice recorder. Nothing else is necessary to judge his integrity. He erased it in odd circumstances, so he had something to hide. He said he didn't remember erasing it, but he might have, because he often erased the tape when shutting down the aircraft power at the end of a flight. Fair enough, because other pilots used to do the same thing, only in this case, the recorder was erased nine minutes before the power was shut down. There were nine minutes of usable tape after it was erased, so it wasn't erased as part of his "normal" shut-down routine. It was erased well before he normally would have done so. The only likely reason he would have done this is to hide something, probably some discussion in the cockpit after the accident occurred (because the actual occurrence was over thirty minutes old and wouldn't have been on the thirty minute tape anyway). It was suggested that there was an equipment malfunction that erased it, but there was no history of such a thing happening before. Not to mention the fact that pilots are required to know NTSB regulations along with FAA regulations, and they know that the two recorders are to be preserved after an accident and some types of incidents. An aircraft damaged in flight is an accident that requires recorders to be preserved. A captain would know this, despite the captain saying that he thought the recorders were only used in fatal accidents. He destroyed the recording, and he had a reason for doing so. This should be the crux of our analysis of the pilot's character and honesty. The NTSB was presented with an unprecedented situation where there was tangible reason to disbelieve a surviving pilot. He then was indignant that he was not consulted and he saw a conspiracy against him. There is no way to know what happened to that airplane, and the NTSB did its best in a difficult situation, but in the long history of the Boeing 727 there was never another incident of a similar nature (comparing it to the 737 accidents was a red herring). The really sad thing is that the captain shot himself in the foot so that his words meant nothing. He had nobody but himself to blame. He took himself out of the loop by trying to be clever and remove the voice recorder from the investigation. No wonder the investigators bypassed him. I would have done the same thing. The book is well written by an airline pilot, although the technical elements that he goes into are well beyond the understanding of most people, including most pilots. A lot of it is engineering talk where the rest of us can only follow the basic thread. To most of us, the most important part is an analysis of the captain's personal character and honesty, and the issue with the voice recorder throws a lot of doubt in that direction.

I just finished 'Scapegoat'It is a very well written account of what really happened to TWA 841 and the subsequent railroading of three professional Pilotsby a totally mismanaged and biased 'investigation' by the NTSB.As a professional Pilot myself who flew the B727 for six years in two different seats I can vouch for the authors carefully researchedaccount. It's good to see these much maligned pilots finally have their real story told.

With so much fine detail and meticulous source notes, this must be the definitive account of TWA flight 841. If you think you know all there is to know about this event, think again. Even the widely held conclusions in support of the crew are vigorously challenged here.Controversy was swirling from the get go, and perhaps no other NTSB investigation has generated so much dissention. (The controversial allegations over the TWA flight 800 investigation were largely limited to the conspiracy community.) While finding the technical arguments too dense for me to make a definitive call, for most lay readers the totality of the evidence will tip the scales in favor of the flight 841 crew. What also sets this case apart is the credibility of the dissenters, two of whom were from within the NTSB itself: one of the three voting board members partially dissented, saying he upheld the board’s findings “reluctantly;” and Chuck Miller, widely endorsed as one of the most respected figures in aviation safety, and chief of the Air Safety Bureau at the NTSB in the early 1970s, was a persistent critic who must have been a thorn in the side of the chief investigator of this incident. To the layperson like me, this was key in establishing credibility.Just about every claim both for and against the crew is reviewed thoroughly. I have read a few of the other popular accounts in support of the crew, in which it was assumed the #7 slat extension was the trigger for the event. That claim is more or less put to rest. And the author has also meticulously researched the claim the crew could not have erased the CVR because the parking break had not been set, finding it to be open to question. The book is at its best in establishing what probably did not happen. It’s less conclusive in establishing exactly what did happen; and its theory alleging a direct link between flight 841 and the later 737 rollover crashes of the 1990s seems far more speculative, especially as there were no further repeat 727 upsets in the 12-year interim. All in all, a well written and first rate study. It’s also a moving portrait of Captain “Hoot” himself, and that human angle is a story in itself.°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°Postscript to flight 841:As an aside, it’s an odd coincidence indeed that 5 years earlier, in 1974, yet another TWA flight number 841 with almost the exact same number of passengers on board (though a Boeing 707), also experienced wild maneuvers, including a climb so steep and sudden it tore off one of the wing engines; and then entered an uncontrolled spiral dive. In this case, the cause was a terrorist bomb in the cargo hold. Sadly, that flight 841 crashed off the coast of Greece killing all 88 aboard. So much for the argument that airlines always retire flight numbers after a crash. Flight 841 was still running as late as the 1990s.
