If you're just starting out to investigate how genetics structures all of us, this is a definite must read. It's scientific enough to learn the basics of genetics (DNA & RNA plus interactions..) but also written in a story format, adequate for thorough consumption by a new scientist or the average reader. Note that if you don't have some training in at least anatomy and its physiology, you may need to read it more than once, I have engineering and physics training but no real training in physiology and read it twice, and may still read specific parts yet again. This book has already helped me gain a thorough understanding of genetics and how it applies to my life, plus it's helped make better sense of my own DNA test results.
Skwareckie does a good job explaining the basics of the current state of genetics, starting from the basics of the chemistry involved. Worthwhile as an update or introduction for interested people without the need to go into more technical detail.
