It's been nothing short of a joy to read these translations by Robert Alter, and this translation of Psalms just might be the best of them all. Aside from the beauty of the words and the images they conjure, the notes were equally valuable and interesting. I learned about the different genres of psalms as well as clues to when they might have been written. Fascinating stuff, really. Alter tends to dismiss a lot of scholarly speculation as to particular uses of or specific events which may have led to the composition of certain psalms, differing in this respect from Robert Price, but that doesn't take away from the pleasure of reading. I will say that reading this book straight through probably wasn't the best idea, due to some repetitiveness, but that is in no way a bad reflection on the actual content or translation. As with the last few Alter translations, there aren't any links to footnotes. Not great, but I'm used to it by now. Of course, as with the others, I heartily recommend this to students of religious texts, or people who like good poetry. This is certainly one of the ultimate collections and is high-quality in every respect.
I love the King James translation and it's very interesting to read KJV side by side with Alter's version. His renditions are usually more succinct than KJV. He is fairly literal and tries to capture the often brief and terse usage of the Hebrew. In trying to capture the alliterations in Hebrew, he makes some odd but interesting word choices. I prefer this to the "dynamic equivalence" of many modern translations. Alter's commentaries are primarily about translation issues. You won't find much of a theological or devotional nature in his notes, except to the extent that understanding the translation is devotional in itself. The lay out is nice, with single columns and verse formatting. The generous amount of white space makes the book look nice (and gives room for personal notes if you're so inclined) but also makes it a physically large book.
I am enjoying reading Mr. Alter's translation of the Psalms. It gives a fresh angle, and it fills a void. Considering how prominent the psalms are, both in being quoted as prophetic in the New Testament, and in Christian liturgy and spirituality, it is notable how little in depth commentary there is on the psalms. This book is certainly not written from a Christian point of view -- I knew that going in. That said, I was disappointed by Mr. Alter's analysis of the psalms. One of the fascinating questions is, why are they arranged as they are? One theory is that they more or less track the history of Israel, with emphasis on David moving to the fore, his accession as king, the coronation of Solomon, and then decline and destruction, exile and then the return to the land and even hints of a new temple. It's not a totally satisfying theory, but it has possibilities.Unfortunately, Mr. Alter offers very little beyond, "who knows?"That said, he does provide lots of line-by-line analysis, and his translation does shed light. I am glad I bought the book.
As a life long prayer of the Psalms, the whole psalter every month. And doing scholarly work on the Psalms for 30+ years there is very few 1 volume works that can compare to Alter's work. I have both an electronic and hard copy of the work. The hard copy is off to be rebound in a couple of weeks. It has been in constant use. Alter's translation is what I use in weekly worship service with the congregations I serve. I have not had 1 complaint and lots of positive responses. His facileness with Hebrew is beyond anything I have encountered before. It brings the text alive and in many places ways that I would not have been aware or considered. The textual notes are very enlightening particularly when bring to light the thoughts of other scholars that I would not be aware of since I am not in the Academy but parish, especially Rabbinic thoughts. I bought the electronic edition to add to hard copy since I did not want to be in a situation where Alter's text was not available to me. If a student or prayer of the Psalms this is an edition that one needs to have close at hand.
Alter makes the Psalms come alive through revelatory notes throughout on the Hebrew and contextual circumstances of the poems' construction. However, most of the comments he makes, as far as I've found, are also located in The Psalms: A Commentary by Artur Weiser... and that book has more notes which are not found in this volume. So, there's a trade-off. You can have a slightly slimmer book (this one) or one with extra notes (Weiser's). Both are great.
I've been following Alter's progress in translating since his 1999 Genesis. He has an amazing grasp of biblical poetics and a gift for explaining to readers. His style of translation attempts to capture the literary style of the original Hebrew, remain true to the original, and yet also craft a readable text. If you read not only the text but also his notes, you will spend much more time in the reading--this won't be a quick spin through the Good News Bible--but you will know infinitely more about the beauty, underlying significance, and intention of the original. If you don't know the language well enough to read the ancient texts in their originals, but really would like to know something about what it might show you, then these translations are likely something you will love.
