I'm currently a senior at Cornell University, and if there has been one book that has effectively navigated my Law School Application Process, it has been Mr.Montauk's "How to get into the Top Law Schools" guide. Mr Montauk will decribe, in depth, the best way to prepare your personal satement, resume, and how to proceed if waitlsited or rejected by your top choice. He also effectively communicates how to choose the right school for you, preferred LSAT course, and how to minimize the cost of Law School and how to construct your marketing strategy. The book also includes quotes from real Law School Deans on what they expect from applicants and what they can do to maximize their strenghs and minize their weaknesses. Simply put, this is the best guide on the market that guides you from deciding on Law School to what to expect in your law career. I whole heartedly recommend this book.
This is by far the best book I've read to prepare myself for the dreaded application process, I truly feel like I have an advantage over others who haven't read it. What I like a lot is that this book starts off discussing the realities of law school and the legal profession in general. The book would be of best use to those who are far from applying, however one of the great elements about it is that it also accommodates to those who will be applying fairly soon. It also does a great job discussing the possible ways to improve one's applications even if their credentials are not top notch. Great book, if you are merely thinking about applying to law school (even if you are not aiming for a top institution), I highly suggest you read this!
Literal garbage. Do not go near this book if you want a chance of getting into law school. Information is outdated and, in some cases, just plain wrong.
Probably more valuable before Internet forums came along
The single most important book I ever read. I purchased this book in the summer before my freshmen year of college (2011), and it changed my life. Seven years later, after acting on all the wonderful advice contained in this book, I am delighted to say that I was accepted to 3 Ivy League law schools with six-figure scholarships at each. Richard Montauk gets it, plain and simple. He knows how the admissions processes work and what it takes to succeed.
I've read three admissions books, but Richard Montauk's book is a must for any law school applicant and in my view, the best. Not only does he provide an extensive overview of the admissions process, but also includes interviews from actual admissions deans. The information is organized nicely and is broken down to literally guide you from deciding whether law school is for you to getting you ready for your first semester.
This is the only book you will need to help you apply to law school. The author covers everything from personal statements to Loan repayment programs at top schools. The author focus on top twenty schools but the information should be helpful to anyone. The best part is hundreds of quotes on all subjects directly from the deans of admissions at top schools. It includes quotes from the deans at every school in the top 15 in the U.S. News and world report rankings and a number of other institutions including Boston College, George Washington, USC, UCLA, and Boston University. This is particularly helpful if you are targeting one of these top schools. There are executive summaries at the end of the chapters if you don't have time to read the entire book. This work will help anyone taking the application process seriously to maximize their chances of getting into the best school they can.
This book certainly has some helpful information, but the author spends a good bit of time trying to help the reader make sure that he/she wants to go to law school and wants to be a laywer. He does some motive-chekcing (Why do want to go to LS? Are you sure you're doing it for the right reasons? etc). This may prove helpful for those who are still unsure, but not for those who have already thought through these questions. However, the book has good info. on writing a personal statement; that's the part that I found to be the most helpful. Some of the other info. (about the LSAT, etc) you can find on the LSAC website or through LSAT study guides that you might end up buying anyway (such as the Analytical and Logical Reasoning Bible--GREAT books).I think the section of the personal statement is what made this book worth the purchase.
