Jasper Fforde is back with a new novel set in a new world. Best known for the Thursday Next series Fforde has been compared to Pratchett for his inventive world building, sparkling prose, humor and quirky Englishness.In this long awaited latest adventure we are introduced to Charlie, a state foundling raised by nuns in a world that seems surprisingly similar to our own. Similar except in two minor respects: the freezing winters of an encroaching ice age and the fact that humans hibernate through the darkness and cold of winter. And these minor differences change... everything.I love Fforde's work, especially the last 2 novels with their unique and imaginative stand alone worlds. His writing has a cinematic quality and a retro feel that I appreciate. You could easily imagine Early Riser on the big screen with its howling blizzards and claustrophobic dormatoriums... This is an adventure story and a horror novel, the cannibalistic night walkers and particularly creepy. This is a dark story, but filled with humor and human warmth.I detect a nod to Tove Janson's Moomintroll series here, specifically Moominvalley in Winter, in humans covered in fur, in the separation between the Winter and Summer worlds, in the architecture, and in the Gronk - a fearsome Winter spirit that invokes Janson's Groke of chilling memory.Early Riser is a not to be missed romp in a new world from a master storyteller. Take a premise of climate change severe winter, combine human ability to adapt and stretch it as far as it will go in absurdity. Fforde's a solid writer, his characters are believeable, and his society machinations follow familiar haves, have nots and profit. The story revolves around Charles trying to survive first Winter as Consul. He's dragged through situations that he has conflicting or little information and must survive. The creativity is great, but by mid book the absurdity was getting tedious partly because it lacked connection until the last quarter. Several times I switched to another book for a break and then went back to finish it. First time that happened. Not sure I would try another book of his.
Read this if you enjoy the whimsical and the absurd, original ideas, and excellent storytelling. If you’ve read the author’s other books, this one is definitely consistent with their quality and style. In short - I had a ton of fun reading Early Riser! I hope Jasper Fforde comes out with many more books; it’s tough to find other writers I enjoy reading so much.
Well, you either love Jasper Fforde or you don’t read him. He ha created yet another alternate, parallel universe that is internally consistent, echoes the one in which we live and is yet entirely other. His characters feel as real and relatable (or as hate-able) as any in realism, but the bizarre environment in which they operate make action and reactions far less predictable. The humor of his writing and his ability to evoke empathy for entirely alien creatures and in almost entirely alien situations make this much more than a fantasy adventure. It can be a quick read if you want it to be, but ir bears giving it time to work its magic. (yeah—I love Jasper Fforde’s writing!)
Spot on Fforde brilliance with more plot twists and surprises than a Thursday Next rewrite. Read it straight through as I couldn’t wait to see how it ended.
I had no idea what to expect from this book. It was recommended to me with little explanation. I'm so glad I read it! The characters have so much depth and personality. The narrator has a sense of humor but is also very relatable. The world the author creates is magnificent and includes its own nuances and vernacular. I've even be recommending this book to my friends who don't like sci-fi!
As a fan of Jasper Fforde it's hard for me not to give him 5 stars, especially after waiting so long for another book. It's not my favorite -- the Thursday Next series will always be hard to top for me -- but it's still one of the more entertaining books I have read in a while. I thought it was an absurd and fun ride with an unlikely hero in a world that might be closer to reality than we care to admit.
