Review

“ . . . brilliantly written, very well researched, and filled with fascinating historical stories and a wealth of exercises to help readers fully experience the powerful ancient shamanic practices of the Norse shamans. This book is superb!” (Sandra Ingerman, M.A., coauthor of Speaking with Nature and author of Walking in Light: The Everyday)“An exceptional, authentic, and wonderfully informative exploration of the ancient ancestry, landscape, and mythology of Northern Europe and Norse shamanism--interspersed with accessible practical exercises reconstructing traditional practices of seiðr for contemporary personal use. One of the best books on this subject I have read. If you are looking for a book on Norse shamanism, this is it.” (June Kent, editor and founder of Indie Shaman magazine)“According to Norse mythology, whoever drinks from the Mead of Poetry will gain the abilities of a scholar-poet and be able to solve any riddle or problem presented to them. With this beautifully written and powerfully instructive book, Evelyn Rysdyk has popped the cork on this precious elixir and is offering us a taste of the wisdom to be found in the teachings of northern European shamanism.” (Hillary S. Webb, author of Exploring Shamanism and Traveling between the Worlds: Conversations with)“Wise woman Rysdyk opens the mysterious portals to the ancient ancestral female shamanic traditions of Scandinavia and invites us to connect with the spiritual power found therein. She is a knowledgeable, trustworthy, and generous guide.” (Mama Donna Henes, urban shaman and author of Celestially Auspicious Occasions: Seasons, Cycles, and)“The Norse Shaman skillfully weaves scholarly insight with an abundance of guided, hands-on experience. In an exceptionally clear and thorough voice, Evelyn Rysdyk inspires us to make the earth-honoring wisdom of the far north--and the magic of the distant past--come alive in our hearts, and in our world, today.” (Llyn Roberts, coauthor of Speaking with Nature, recipient of the Nautilus Book Awards Gold Medal)“Evelyn Rysdyk uses her shaman’s discerning heart and wide-ranging intelligence to unearth precious, hard-won wisdom from our northernmost European ancestors, integrating it with the latest findings in anthropology, genetics, and the unsettling lessons of quantum physics to offer us exciting new ways to understand our humanity and place in the Universe. This is a book to change your life. Do the exercises and you’ll never feel alone and helpless again.” (Ellen Winner, author of World Shaman and Thoughts in the Mind of God)“This book is a gem! Part historical review, part instruction manual, the author stokes the fires of her Norse heritage to warm the hearts and kindle the minds of her readers. Evelyn Rysdyk is a triple threat--a brilliant illustrator, a renowned shamanic healer and teacher, and a gifted writer at the height of her craft. A very satisfying read. Highly recommended.” (Paul Bowersox coauthor of Seeing in the Dark)“I love how this work blends the wisdom we find in mythology with the insights that modern technology, science, and new physics has given us. Evelyn is a shaman who embodies the knowledge and practice of Norse shamanism through ancestry, calling, profession, and daily life.” (Colleen Deatsman, shamanic practitioner, author of The Hollow Bone, and coauthor of Seeing in the Da)“Evelyn Rysdyk has written a very important book. For anyone longing to deepen their personal transformation, enhance their shamanic practice, help our modern society restore balance and harmony with nature and its inhabitants, and bring back the sacred feminine in all aspects of their lives, I recommend this book as an integral part of their toolbox.” (Claude Poncelet, Ph.D., author of The Shaman Within)“This fascinating book weaves together the history and evolution of shamanism in northern Europe with the impact of climate change and human migration at least 12,000 years ago. Rysdyk has generously illustrated aspects of shamanic life with her original pen and ink drawings. Materials and instructions for journeying are offered throughout the book. It is an essential read for anyone interested in shamanic traditions." (Jennifer Barker, author of The Goddess Within and Persephone Woman)

This is a wonderful book. I had never heard of the author but found her book recommend by Sandra Ingerman in her most recent newsletter from Oct: 2016. I have been looking for a book like this on Norse Shamanism for about 20 years. I have never run into a better researched or practice oriented book on Norse Shamanism. Since this is the tradition and area I am called to work in I felt like I had come home. I have read many other books on Norse magic etc. and this is the first time I felt like I was reading the words of an actual practicing Norse Shaman for real. It was quite powerful and very grounded and practical. I was not surprised to see that Evelyn took workshops form the Foundation for Shamanic Studies, which I have also done. Her work was clearly grounded in real research both in the library and in the inner landscapes of the spirit world. With this book I feel like I can now move forward and develop on this pathway that has been calling to me for years. I will check out her other book and see if she offers workshops. This book is well worth it if you are serious about exploring Norse Shamanism.

Well researched and rooted in findings in anthropology, archeology and history, as well as personal experience. I appreciated that the author delved deeper than just the Viking Age.I didn't necessarily agree 100% with everything, but that's OK. It's how critical thinking works in conjunction with personal gnosis. The fire practice, connection with Ancestors, and journeying under a ritual hood have been particularly effective in my personal practice. I look forward to growing my personal shamanic practice incorporating many of these seidr methods. I have already made incredible breakthroughs!

This book is incredible. Her research is spot on and she cites sources well. The book is a series of fascinating information and follow up exercises for the reader. It probably helps to have a background in shamanism, which I do, but I'm not sure it's necessary either. Some of my personal heritage is from this area of the world and it's great to finally learn about shamanism that is historically and traditionally Northern European. Every chapter led me to research even more. There was so much I had never heard of, like archeological findings. I look forward to more from the author.

Evelyn Rysdyk is a most awesome teacher & author. She is clear, concise, well-researched, impeccable & loving in her teaching, conduct and writing! I heartily recommend this and previous books she has written. Enjoy!

I have just finished reading The Norse Shaman and highly recommend it to anyone interested in the Mystical aspects of the Norse tradition. This book sheds light on the human culture of the Norse, as well as the Spiritual nature inherent in this world and beyond. It is a comprehensive and well-researched book that also goes beyond the Norse tradition by informing the reader about other Shamanic traditions using historical and anthropological examples to help the reader better understand where do the Nordic traditions arise from. Finally, in The Norse Shaman, Evelyn C. Rysdyk speculates on the shift between Matriarchal into Patriarchal society with a fascinating understanding between Hunter-Gatherer versus Pastoral cultures. The Norse Shaman is not only a great guide to understanding the Shamanic practice but also is great to understand the differences between the two Norse Gods' families.

Although some of this was a review for me I found it very useful. Well researched and thought out. A bit heavy on fire exercises. But what was there was easily adapted to my use. Especially good for a beginner but useful for those already on the path.

I've read this book before and i wanted my own copy because i loved it so much! It has given me a better understanding of Seidr ( which is my personal path) and shamanism as a whole. evelyn has a great writing style and she's super easy to follow and understand.

Very impressed with this author. The research is intense and the ink drawings are outstanding. This book motivated me to buy and read her other shaman books which are equally well documented and highly motivating.

I met Mona in a coffeeshop. What a sweet lady! We talked for some time about how young people (my age 22 and younger) are seeing a trend of pop culture references that make light of the Holocaust and WWII. There are few survivors left, and someone needs to tell the stories the way they should be told, the way we should remember. Mona & Lee Cohen do exactly that in this book. They tell the heartfelt story of their mother Lisa Jura, based entirely on true stories and real people. Jura's family sent her to England as a young child on the Kindertransport, in hopes that she could use her brilliant talent as a pianist to make a life for herself. She had to leave her parents, sisters, friends, and neighbors behind. But despite her fears, loneliness, and confusion (why would the Nazis do this?), Lisa Jura always found a way to be thankful, polite, and appreciative of the good things in life. This is more than just a survival story; it's a story about how she and the other Jewish children refugees found ways to make their lives rich and meaningful in times when life didn't seem to make sense. This is a quick read -- in one sitting in case you get addicted, and can't put it down! -- and very uplifting. It reminds you to be thankful for what you've got, and not brood on what could have or would have been. It is not a depressing book, but it will bring tears to your eyes!I shared this book with family and friends, and everyone loves it so much that they've asked to buy their own copies. ***** FIVE STARS

I didn't know what to expect from this memoir-style book but ended up liking it very much. The real-life story of a young girl's escape from Nazi-occupied Vienna to the completely different world of London is compelling and touching. It's also informative about what life was like living in greater London during the heavy bombing. Kudos to the residents who "stayed calm and carried on." Such conditions are difficult to imagine.Lisa's determination is inspiring as she struggles to keep a promise made to her mother to continue her music studies. The lives of her closest friends in the refugee orphanage are also hinted at. They all served as a substitute family in place of the ones they left behind.I give it four stars instead of five only because the story is told second-hand. The author, Maya Golabek, is Lisa's daughter. She does a fine job of evoking the time and place and covering the major points of her mother's life. Still, it's always preferable to get such a story firsthand. But overall, this was an excellent book.

This book is another side of WWII. People are amazing in helping others in such difficult times and situations. May we all be so resilient and full of charity.

Have heard and read about the Kindertransport before but never the details of the lives led by the children once they got to England. The fact that they all survived is a blessing considering that most of their families perished. It was difficult to put down. I loved the way the children got along and helped each other. Also amazed at how helpful the English embraced and helped the children as much as they could.

In what could be a depressing tale, the author shares the story of the Kindertransport in a personal and touching way that brings the story to life. Though I have read much about the victims of the Holocaust, this was the first I read of someone who was part of the transport which saved 10,000 children. A part of contemporary history that needs to continue to be told.

It was hard to read such inhumanity to man, but the sacrifice/love of parents for their children no matter how hard it was, was sole searching! The strength shown by Lisa and so many others was amazing...they didn't give up, even when they could have! I couldn't put the book down once I started. An excellent read for all ages...and it was true!

A great book. I truly felt that I got to know these children who had no choice in leaving their families. Being brave enough to face the world without their parents guidance and having the drive to become successful. It was a wonderful heartfelt story. Looking forward to seeing the play "The Pianist of Willesden Lane" at Hartford Stage, CT in Spring 2015.

The Children of Willesden Lane is about some of the 10,000 children from the Kindertransport of 1938 - 1939. An absolutely excellent book that follows some of the children from 1938 through 1945. Much of the focus is on Bloomsbury House, which housed about 32 children from the transport. One of the authors of the book is Mona Golabek, the daughter of Lisa Jura, one of the children from the transport. This book has so much heartbreak, but also lots of joy. An excellent read.

Review

Winner of the 2019 Alex AwardNebula Award Finalist for Best Novella“A sinewy mosaic of Haitian sky pirates, wily street urchins, and orisha magic. Beguiling and bombastic!” ―Scott Westerfeld, New York Times bestselling author"Definitely do not miss this lightning fast romp through the steampunk bayous of an alternate New Orleans. Clark’s story bleeds with style, elaborate language, and unforgettable characters who are pulled by the undercurrents of hidden gods.”―Daniel H. Wilson, bestselling author of Robopocalypse and The Clockwork Dynasty“Clark masterfully rewrites history in this spellbinding post-Civil War fantasy…. This story is thrillingly original and will enthrall fans of alternate histories.” ― Publishers Weekly, starred review“This delightful novella is a breath of fresh air, and promises good things for P. Djèlí Clark’s career – though I should note that he already has no mean streak in shorter fiction…. Renegade scientists, feral girls, nuns whose knowledge is this side of disturbing: Djèlí Clark creates a setting that feels vivid and alive, and populates it with interesting, complicated characters – even if we only really meet Creeper and Ann-Marie up close. The Black God’s Drums is, in short, a delight. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I’ll definitely be looking up P. Djèlí Clark’s other work.” ―Locus magazine “International intrigue involving the Confederacy, strange science, and hoodoo magic!” ―David D. Levine, author of the Andre Norton Award winning-novel Arabella of Mars“Whether you're new to orisha magic or seasoned in the lore, Clark's retro-afrofuturistic tale will keep you engrossed in a world of airships, New Orleans, alternative history, and renegade scientists. The language and setting is so authentic you'll taste the gumbo.” ―Tade Thompson, author of The Murders of Molly Southbourne and the Nommo Awards-winning Rosewater“A mesmerizing, sprawling alternate history brimming with authenticity and voice. You'll be bitterly disappointed when it's over. Clark's novella will leave you ravenous for more.” ―Justina Ireland, author of Dread Nation“This mashup of history and culture has been perfectly distilled into a world fully realized and authentic. AU-THEN-TIC. Down to the sounds and tastes. Clark is a griot of the first order and The Black God's Drums is a call from the ancestors, an invitation to join in with them to celebrate story.” ― Maurice Broaddus, author of Buffalo Soldier and the Knights of Breton Court trilogy“P. Djeli Clark's novella sunk its teeth into me from the first page, with a narrative voice that perfectly captures the spirit of The Crescent City. It chilled me to the bone, warmed my heart, and had me laughing out loud―sometimes all at once.” –Robyn Bennis, author of the Signal Airship series“The Black God’s Drums is a must read for fans of fantasy and alternate histories alike . . . Clark has proven time and again that he’s a talent to watch, and this latest offering cements him as one of the best new fantasy authors around.” ―Troy L. Wiggins, executive editor of FIYAH Magazine“A superb and elegant blend of alternate history, top-shelf worldbuilding, magic, and steampunk adventure with a unique voice to tie it all together. I can't wait for more tales in this setting!” ― Michael F. Haspil, author of Graveyard Shift“The Black God's Drums is a fast paced tale of wit, wiles, and wisdom.” ― Curtis Craddock, author of An Alchemy of Masques and Mirrors

Finished THE BLACK GOD'S DRUMS from @pdjeliclark and YALL...yall. What an amazing piece of work. I am always, always impressed by my friend, but man did he put in some work here. The worldbuilding was stellar and really took into account all the ways his alternate history would play out. I think when black writers imagine a world history where slavery isn't just one devastating loss after loss for us it's easy to lean into something utopia-ish. Of course the author's background and knowledge would never allow for something that rose colored and convenient. Haiti might be free and flourishing in this world, but the tyrannical, racist regime of the American South and its Confederates still exist. A great weapon beat back Europe, but it cost the slave rebels too. But beyond the worldbuilding, the characters are so easy to fall into. If you've seen people talk about the nuns it's for good reason. Trust me. If there was nothing else to this story but the nuns then it would be worth it.Please, please read this story.@pdjeliclark is going to be a name you want to say you started reading from the beginning. He has that element that so many writers (myself included) strive to find. He knows his voice and he knows the kind of stories he wants to execute with it.Bravo my friend!

I don’t normally read many novellas, but P. Djèlí Clark has given us quite the fun romp in The Black God’s Drums. This is a wonderful fantasy novella, easily readable in one sitting, that does a tremendous job of plot twists and world building. There’s a lot to like here! This novella made such a fun morning read on my day off one week. First off, the world building was quite deep for something that took me roughly two hours to read. I loved the world that Clark was able to flesh out. He also has a gift for communicating with brevity but without sacrificing detail. Reading the novella was almost like watching a painter start with a blank canvas, and with each stroke, make a picture come to life. I’d now like an epic fantasy trilogy set in this same world, that’s the level of world building we’re talking here. There are also a couple twists that were fun to read and figuring out where things were going or how they’d end up kept things engaging. There isn’t a ton to criticize in this novella. There were a couple times I felt like things worked out a little too easily for the main character. Actually, it might be better to say that there were a few sort of literal deus ex machina situations that lessened the impact of some moments for me.If you’re looking for a fun, short read that does some really fun stuff with world building and gets your pulse pounding from scene to scene, then give The Black God’s Drums a read! I’m definitely looking forward to reading some of the other short stories and novella’s that Clark has written.4/5 stars.5 – I loved this, couldn’t put it down, move it to the top of your TBR pile4 – I really enjoyed this, add it to the TBR pile3 – It was ok, depending on your preferences it may be worth your time2 – I didn’t like this book, it has significant flaws and I can’t recommend it1 – I loathe this book with a most loathsome loathing

This book was amazing - the best new book I've read in YEARS. The author is a fantastic world builder, and his general descriptions of the goings on around the characters slowly divulge this magical place without great exposition. His characters are simple yet absolutely amazing. I would love to read more about this lively, unique world. I will read every single word this extraordinary young author writes! Thank you sir!

The Black God’s Drums is a novella by P. Djèlí Clark, and features an alternative history America where the events of the American Civil War have been slightly changed and the States are not as United as they once were. Slavery is still present, but there are key differences, and each state operates to its own rules. Separate to that, there is now steampunk technology and it’s on an airship that our main character, Creeper, wants to escape on and leave New Orleans far, far behind.Born during a violent storm, Creeper has divine powers curtesy of Oya, the African orisha of the wind and storms, who lives inside her and pulls her this way and that to her own purposes. Such as sending her warning signs or shoving attackers away by force, and in return Creeper is able to be stealthy and move silently, which enables her pickpocket lifestyle as well as being able to hear dangerous things, and eventually, come into close contact with a very dangerous weapon. The airship captain is especially a favourite, and I would love a series of her life and loves (please and thank you), as well as a heck of a lot more of this world and the rest of its characters – Creeper goes without saying, and I'd love to know more of the nuns. This is a powerful and elegantly written novella at only just 100 pages. You have a full world and history in your head, beautifully orchestrated characters, and while this is a satisfying read plot-wise it’s simply too good to leave it there – you’ll need and want more.Let’s hope we get it.

Lord of the Flies, by William Golding

Amazon.com Review

William Golding's classic tale about a group of English schoolboys who are plane-wrecked on a deserted island is just as chilling and relevant today as when it was first published in 1954. At first, the stranded boys cooperate, attempting to gather food, make shelters, and maintain signal fires. Overseeing their efforts are Ralph, "the boy with fair hair," and Piggy, Ralph's chubby, wisdom-dispensing sidekick whose thick spectacles come in handy for lighting fires. Although Ralph tries to impose order and delegate responsibility, there are many in their number who would rather swim, play, or hunt the island's wild pig population. Soon Ralph's rules are being ignored or challenged outright. His fiercest antagonist is Jack, the redheaded leader of the pig hunters, who manages to lure away many of the boys to join his band of painted savages. The situation deteriorates as the trappings of civilization continue to fall away, until Ralph discovers that instead of being hunters, he and Piggy have become the hunted: "He forgot his words, his hunger and thirst, and became fear; hopeless fear on flying feet." Golding's gripping novel explores the boundary between human reason and animal instinct, all on the brutal playing field of adolescent competition. --Jennifer Hubert

"Lord of the Flies is one of my favorite books. That was a big influence on me as a teenager, I still read it every couple of years." —Suzanne Collins, author of The Hunger Games"As exciting, relevant, and thought-provoking now as it was when Golding published it in 1954."—Stephen King"The most influential novel...since Salinger's Catcher in the Rye." —Time"This brilliant work is a frightening parody on man's return (in a few weeks) to that state of darkness from which it took him thousands of years to emerge. Fully to succeed, a fantasy must approach very close to reality. Lord of the Flies does. It must also be superbly written. It is." —The New York Times Book Review "Sparely and elegantly written...Lord of the Flies is a grim anti-pastoral in which adults are disguised as children who replicate the worst of their elders' heritage of ignorance, violence, and warfare." —Joyce Carol Oates, New York Review of Books

In my quest to read the greatest American horror stories of all time, I'm so elated to say I've finally reached Lord of the Flies. Oh my, what an epic story in great proportions! I think what scared me the most about this story are the parallels between the timeline in the story and our time we're living right now.Our story begins with a plane crash that lands the boys on this beautiful coral oasis island in the middle of who-knows-where. Immediately, Ralph, being one of the eldest boys decides to take it upon himself to explore the island and find out how many others are there. He takes a conch shell and blows through it and discovers there are various size boys displaced the same as he.Until they can be rescued, Ralph takes a poll and asks the boys to vote who should be their chief to help guide them. Hands down, Ralph wins. It is realized very early that the littler boys are frightened and crying for their mothers, while the bigger boys begin to think of survival straight away. As they explore and learn about the island, they find fruit they can eat, while some of them ate things that weren't so good, causing them to get sick. The longer they stayed on the island, it was becoming obvious that a shift was changing within 'some' of the boys. Ralph could clearly see that his word was no longer being listened to. They seemed to be interested in Jack Merridew and what he had to say. After all, he was about killing pigs for meat to eat, and killing anything 'else' that stood in his way. As the story advances, it becomes very clear that these young boys have turned into total savages. They reverted back to caveman days without thought or a care in the world.Eventually, as the boys began to divide, Jack's tribe was much larger than Ralph's. Poor Ralph had no one he could confide in or help him. Jack had a thirst for blood and didn't mind spilling it--and it did not have to be a pig's blood. If you didn't follow 'his' rules, you might find a spear stuck in your chest.I've always heard about Lord of the Flies and I knew when someone said people are acting like the named title, I knew exactly what they meant. The saddest thing of all, Golding wrote this novel 64 years ago, and here I can see things happening to our country right now! Actually, not just our country, but the world. With social media and politicians who feel it's quite all right to say and act any way they please as if this is the norm! All the laws and rights we Americans have fought so hard for to ensure an equality for all Americans, was for not. Our country is reverting back to a time I dare not think of. Hmm, see the similarities of the story and today! Who knew Golding would tell a story that would eventually come true. How terrifying is that!

Review of the Novel: As a teacher, I have to teach the same novels repeatedly. Quite a few novels that were immensely meaningful to me as a teenager are in hindsight only great young adult novels or at best great for only a few reads. The Lord of the Flies, however, is not one of those works. I must have read it closely at least ten or even twenty times by now, but I still find it engaging and stumble upon new realizations. Students who think they've already read (and/or failed to appreciate) the Lord of the Flies discover a work that shakes them to the core of their being, once I force them to slow down and really appreciate Golding's rich work. And I'm really not being hyperbolic. I just want to teach this novel over and over and over again.Review of the Penguin Great Books edition (ISBN 978-0-14-028333-4): As for this edition, I highly recommend it. The cover is well-designed aesthetically and functionally. The binding is tight, especially for a paperback. The deckle edges are a nice touch. The font type and spacing is quite nice, not too big or small, so that it can pack in the entire novel into 182 pages of fine-quality paper that might actually be acid-free, even if not lignan-free, versus versus Riverhead edition's acidic 272 pages. The only downside to this edition is that the margins are a bit narrow for someone like me who loves marginalia. But otherwise, I'd highly recommend this edition.OK, I'm done sounding super stuffy now.

I was tempted to give this five stars, since in so many ways it strikes me as the kind of masterpiece, like Heart of Darkness, that I imagine will retain its horror and readability for centuries. The prose veers (or as Golding would say it, "tends") from plain to painterly. The story is well known: a sort of allegorical morality play set in modern times -- fancy English boys left to their own devices don't so much as revert to darkness as discover primitive outlets for the darkness reflected in their greater society. This is what I love about Heart of Darkness: try as one might, Kurtz cannot be pigeonholed into good or evil. He is excellent at what he does, and what he does is evil. Kurtz is a true reflection of what excellence was to Colonial Europe, and in so far as Colonial Europe was good, cultivated, honorable, and esteemed, so is Kurtz. Kurtz isn't good or evil; he is true.Golding's version is darker. It centers mostly around the corrupting power of urges to overwhelm social order. Freudian criticism abounds, but the parallel I kept coming back to was Rome. I found that Piggy, no matter how truly annoying he is (another brilliant stroke by Golding is to make Piggy strangely unsympathetic), recalled those numerous Republicans of the Early Empire who advocated in a shrill but useless manner for a return to Senate rule but were shunted aside and usually killed by deranged sociopaths who behaved quite like like Jack. But be it Freudian or historic, any framing of this book feels cheap and hollow because the story has such a complexity of primal urges that it feels almost biological.Golding said he came up with the idea of book after reading his children "Treasure Island or Coral Island or some such Island" in the years of the hydrogen bomb and Stalin and asked his wife, "why don't I write a children's story about how people really are, about how people actually behave?" To me that's a chilling question and it reveals an architecture not based on rigid Freudian or historical or symbolic parallels. Its portrait of sadism could have been lifted out of the newspapers; its struggle for dominion over the weak is an almost sexual frenzy recalls everything I know about torture in the dungeons of Argentine or US military prisons. In this respect, I think the book, like Heart of Darkness, is timeless. But I chose not to give it five stars because at the center of Golding's book is a kind of rigid Christian iconography, like that you find in the Poisonwood Bible, that offends me, perhaps because it reminds me of the way I wrote my Freshman year of college, or perhaps because that rigidity, that allegiance to a=b symbolic logic insults my intelligence. The martyrdom of Simon, I felt, demeaned the human quality of Simon. I liked him best because he struck me as the most shrewd and practical. Reducing him to an icon transforms him into a variable: Simon = Paul or Peter or whomever, but ergo facto Simon ≠Simon. When he comes down to the beach mutting "something about a body on a hill" Simon ceases to be a reflection of human complexity, or biological completeness, and instead becomes a rehashed precedent from Sunday school.I've often felt that Heart of Darkness' genius was that it somehow reflected the effect of Darwin and modern thinking on the antiquated ideas of Colonial Europe, ie Kurtz isn't good or evil because good and evil are artifices that wilt beneath analysis. When Golding adheres to this materialist perspective, the book is masterly. When he swears allegiance to worn out Christian parables, that complexity is reduced to slips of paper.

This book is a fascinating and convincing analysis of (1) the political contest between pro and anti-slavery forces during the founding of the United States, (2) the legacy left by that contest in the text of the Constitution, and (3) the contribution of that legacy to the eventual destruction of slavery. Short and to the point, yet nuanced and complex, it presumes on the part of the reader a basic familiarity with American history and the U.S. Constitution. As the author, Sean Wilentz, explains, during the last thirty years, historians have “forced a reckoning with the Constitution’s concessions to slavery that scholars had evaded for generations”—such as the infamous “three fifths compromise” by which the slave holding states obtained greater representation in the House of Representatives than would have been due them if representation had been based only on their share of the nation’s voting population. While acknowledging the beneficial aspect of that “reckoning,” Wilentz argues that a victory by the forces OPPOSING slavery that has been overlooked by the historians of recent decades was at least equally important in shaping the Constitution, and possibly more decisive in determining the fate of slavery. To make the foundational struggle between pro and anti-slavery forces more comprehensible, Wilentz first explains that one of the central purposes of the constitution was to increase the security of personal property—a purpose that also motivated Congress when it added the Bill of Rights with its “Fifth Amendment,” which prohibits the government from taking away any person’s “life, liberty or property without due process of law.”At the time of the constitutional convention, under the laws of the states in which slavery was legal, enslaved persons were defined as property. If the founders had tried to create a constitution under which the enslaved persons could have been emancipated by the federal government, the founders would have been threatening the slave holders' property rights under state law, and no slave holding state would have accepted such a constitution. However, what the anti-slavery founders were able to do was to EXCLUDE from the Constitution any hint that enslaved persons ALSO were defined as property under FEDERAL law. For this reason, the new federal government was constitutionally able to prohibit slavery in geographical areas or business transactions controlled by the federal government—such as the territories in the West, and the trade in slaves that was conducted internationally. At the time of the drafting of the Constitution, the power of the federal government to end the international slave trade may have been considered the most important concession made to either side. Ultimately, however, what ended slavery was the power of the federal government to prohibit slavery in the territories. The original Republican party, described by Wilentz as “an antislavery mass organization unprecedented in history,” was dedicated to strangling the institution of slavery by prohibiting its expansion into the territories. The election of the Republican party’s presidential candidate, Abraham Lincoln, triggered secession by the majority of the slave holding states; and secession, in turn, triggered the bloody war that ended slavery.Of course, the seceding slave states insisted that the Constitution had given them federal property rights in their slaves. But Lincoln and his party had a well founded belief to the contrary. In every generation, only a small number of works of history have the potential to significantly enlarge our historical awareness. Sean Wilentz’s “No Property in Man” is such a work.

Wilentz's book on how slavery was treated in the Federal Convention in 1787 has been highly touted by academics and the Wall Street Journal. The praise is justified; Wilentz does a credible job of connecting the dots between the Convention and the secession of the Southern states in 1860. As such, the book will prove to be a handy reference tool for students and historians.Notable among Wilentz's observations are how the Southern states, from the Convention itself, constantly played the secession card to exact concessions from Northern states desirous of forming, and keeping together, the national union. Ironically, the many compromises struck between 1787 and 1860 contained the seeds of the South's destruction in 1865. And Northern patience had clearly worn thin upon the handing down of the Dred Scott decision, which was farcical in its assertions about slavery in the Constitution. Wilentz concludes that the South's worst fear all along was that the North was correct in belief that the Constitution did not authorize, overtly or tacitly, property in man.On the other hand, the "paradox" of the Convention's final product--at times exacerbated by one of the Constitution's authors, James Madison--left much ground to be occupied by supporters of slavery. As Dwight Eisenhower noted in 1960, Robert E. Lee fought for a "constitutionally debatable" issue. That he and the other Confederates were wrong is undeniable; nevertheless, the necessary compromises of 1787 bore bitter fruit that eventually led to war between the states in 1860.The reason I gave "No Property In Man" two stars is because of Wilentz's writing style, which can frankly sap so much energy from its subject (previously treated, in lively manner, by Don Fehrenbacher, Harry Jaffa, and David Potter) that reading it became, at times, a laborious march. This will probably not deter someone who specializes in Constitutional history or slavery, but the book is not exactly suitable for reading history for leisure. With that said, Wiletnz deserves kudos for the insight he brings to the issue of the treatment of slavery in the Constitution.

This book demands a close reading; providing it is very rewarding. One learns how much debate and disagreement went into events that we typically only recognize by a few word descriptives, like The Missouri Compromise or the Compromise of 1850. One comes to admire the courageous persistence of individuals who insisted from the start that slaves were not and could not be treated as "property--yet, how others believed exactly the opposite.Even if you have read many books about this period of history, I believe you will find this illuminating.

Wilentz's book is an elaboration on lectures given at Harvard on the theme of how slavery was and was not recognized in the Constitution. He acknowledges that some of the compromises made -- most notoriously the "three-fifths" rule -- gave disproportionate political weight to Southern slave states by including disenfranchised slaves in their notional populations -- but insists that anti-slavery representatives of various Northern states deliberately refused repeated efforts by Southern representatives to insert language to formalize a property right in slaves in the Constitution itself. He concludes that while the Constitution left slavery in place wherever it existed in 1789, the drafters refrained from any "legitimizing" language in the text -- not by oversight but by design -- and thus laid the groundwork for the abolition of slavery under federal law (but only after a catastrophic civil war).

I disliked nothing.I liked the precise analysis of the slavery issue during the founding and the clear, cogent writting. For anyone wanting to better understand our complex political and legal history with the institution of slavery , this is a must read.

An excellent introduction to Beekeeping and I've bought already 2 books on beekeeping, this is the best so far! Covers everything in a well laid out, narrative style and Well organized and illustrated, leaves little out. If you are interested in bees or beekeeping it is the best I think. Start with this book. Good coverage of the three most popular types of hives, their variants and reasons for each style. Diseases and pests also well covered.I recommended this book.

It was a good book with nice content. However, there were grammatical errors throughout the book and section breaks that made the referenced photos appear other than referenced. But it was a quick read and one that would be good for the person who is interested in beekeeping; but just doing a little research to see if beekeeping is for them or just something for them to support.

This doesn't strike me as professionally written. There's no editing and there are errors.

Beekeeping and Honey extraction has become one of the major sources of income in rural areas in the US today. Hence if you're one of those who are interested in trying such well this book will be your best guide to success. It provided all the need to know proven facts that a beekeeper wanna be must learn. I am very sure that this will be a worth-it read for everyone with the Beekeeping interest. I highly recommend this book to every one.

Loved it! Before I read this book, I literally knew nothing about beekeeping, but now I actually feel kinda confident - it's just that the author does such a good job of explaining each step of the process, without using a bunch of jargon, or getting too technical. This is kind of off topic, but I love the part about what to do in case another hive attacks your hive, a "bee robbery". wtf?!! IDK, something about that makes me laugh - but now I know what to do in case I do actually get a hive, and I see a heist is going down, lol.

A great guide on beekeeping with absolutely everything you need to know and to get you started on your journey to becoming a beekeeper. I grabbed this book to learn more as the idea of keeping bees is awesome and great for my garden, not to mention the sweet honey! Although now it seems like it might be a bit tougher than I thought, but still looks very enjoyable and this book certainly answered all the questions I had.

A lot of useful info. Some essential stuff missing. Therefore, not an "essential" guide . Go with Blackistone's guide.

This is an amazing guide for anyone wanting to learn how the process of Beekeeping works and how you can do it yourself in your back yard. The book is full of highly informative chapters that will teach you step by step how to do beekeeping. If you are a complete beginner, as well as if you have some experience in beekeeping, both ways you will find this book very helpful.A must read!

Digital Control of Dynamic Systems (3rd Edition)

From the Inside Flap

This book is about the use of digital computers in hte real-time control of dynamic systems such as servomechanisms, chemical processes, and vehicles that mover over water, land, air or space. The material requires some understanding of controls. The special topics of discrete and sampled-data system analysis are introduced, and considerable emphasis is given to the z-transform and the close connections between the z-transform and the Laplace transform. The book's emphasis is on designing digital controls to achieve good dynamic response and small errors while using signals that are sampled in time and quantized in amplitude. Both transform (classical control and state-space (modern control) methods are described and applied to illustrative examples. the transform methods emphasized are the root-locus method of evans and frequency response. The root-locus method can be used virtually unchanged for the discrete case; however, Bode's frequency response methods require modification for use with discrete systems. The state-space methods developed are the technique of pole assignment augmented by an estimator (observer) and optimal quadratic loss control. The optimal control problems use the steady-state constant-gain solutions; the results of the separateion theorem in the presence of noise are stated but not proved. Each of these design methods-classical and modern alike - has advantages and disadvantages, strengths and limitations. It is our philosophy that a designer must understand all of them to develop a satisfactory design with the least effort. Closely related to the mainstream of ideas for designing linear systems that result in satisfactory dynamic response are the issues of sample-rate selection, model identification, and consideration of nonlinear phonomena. Sample-rate selection is discussed in the context of evaluating the increase in a least-squared performance measures as the sample rate is reduced. The topic of model making is treated as measurment of frequency response, as well as least-sqwuared parameter estimation. Finally, every designer should be aware that all models are nonlinear and be fimiliar with the concepts of the describing functions of nonlinear systems, methods of studying stability of nonlinear systems, and the basic concepts of nonlinear design. Material that may be new to the student is the treatment of signals which are discrete in time and amplitude and which must coexist with those that are continuous in both dimensions. The philosophy of presentation is that new material should be closely related to material already familiar, and yet, by the end, indicate a direction toward wider horizons. This approach leads us, for example, to relate the z-transform to the Laplace transform and to describe the implications of poles and zeros in the z-plane to the known meanings attached to poles and zeros in the s-plane. Also, in developing the design methods, we relate the digital control design methods to those of continuous systems. For moer sophisticated methods, we present the elementary parts of quadratic-loss Guassian design with minimal proofs to give some idea of how this powerful method is used and to motivate further study of its theory. The use of computer-aided design (CAD) is universal for practicing engineers in this field, as in most other fields. We have recognized this fact and provided guidance to the reader so that learning the controls analysis material can be integrated with learning how to compute the answers with Matlab, the most widely used CAD software package in universities. In many cases, especially in the earlier chapters, actual Matlab scripts are included in the text to explain how to carry out a calculation. In other cases, the Matlab routine is simply named for reference. All the routines given are tabulated in Appendix E for easy reference; therefore, this book can be used as a reference for learning how to use Matlab in control calculations as well as for control systems analysis. In short, we have tried to describe the entiere process, from learning the concepts to computeing the desired results. But we hasten to add that it is mandatory that the student retain the ability to compute simple answers by hand so that the computer's reasonableness can be judged. The First Law of Computers for engineers remains "Garbage In, Garbage Out." Most of the graphical figures in this third edition were generated using Matlab® supplied by The Mathworks, Inc. The files that created the figures are available from Addison Wesley Longman at ftp.aw or from The Mathworks, Inc. at ftp.mathworks/pub/books/franklin. The reader is encouraged to use these Matlab figure files as an additional guide in learning how to perform the various calculations. To review the chapters briefly: Chapter 1 contains introductory comments. Chapters 2 and 2 are new to the third edition. Chapter 2 is a review of the prerequisite continuous control; Chapter 3 introduces the key effects of sampling in order to elucidate many of the topics that follow. Methods of linear analysis are presented in Chapters 4 through 6. Chapter 4 presents the z-transform. Chapter 5 introduces combined discrete and continuous systems, the sampling theorem, and the phenomenon of aliasing. Chapter 6 shows methods by which to generate discrete equations that will approximate continuous dynamics. The basic deterministic design methods are presented in Chapters 7 and 8 - the root-locus and frequency response methods in Chapter 7 and pole placement and estimators in Chapter 8. The state-space material assumes no previous acquaintance with the phase plane or state space, and the necessary analysis is developed from the ground up. Some familiarity with simultaneous linear equations and matrix notation is expected, and a few unusual or more advanced topics such as eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and the Cayley-Hamilton theorem are presented in Appendix C. Chapter 9 introduces optimal quadratic-loss control: First the control by state feedback is presents methods of analysis and design guidelines for the selection of the sampling period in a digital control system. It utilizes the design methods discussed in Chapters 7,8 and 9, in examples illustrating the effects of sample rate. Chapter 12 introduces both nonparametric and parametric identification. Nonparametric methods are based on spectral estimation. Parametric methods are introduced by starting with deterministic lease quares, indroducing random errors, and completing the solution with an algorithm for maximum likelihood. Sub-space methods are also introduced for estimating the state matrices directly. Nonlinear control is the subject of Chapter 13, including examples of plant nonlinearities and methods for the analysis and design of controllers for nonlinear models. Simulation, stability analysis, and performance enhancement by nonlinear controllers and by adaptive design are also included in Chapter 13. The chapter ends with a nonlinear design optimization alternative to the techniques presented in Chapter 9. The final chapter, 14, is a detailed design example of a digital servo for a disk drive head. Table P.1 shows the differences between teh second and third editions of the book. For purposes of organization a course, Fig. P.1 shows the dependence of material in each chapter on previous chapters. By following the solid lines, the reader will have all the background required to understand the material in a particular chapter, even if the path omits some chapters. Furthermore, sections with a star (*) are optional and may be skipped with no loss of continuity. Chapters may also be skipped, as suggested by the dashed lines, if the reader is willing to take some details on faith; however, the basic ideas fo the later chapters will be understood along these paths. The first seven chapters (skipping or quickly reviewing Chapter 2) constitute a comfortable one-quarter course that would follow a course in continuous linear control using a text such as Frankli, Powell, and Emami-Naeini (1994). For a one-semester course, the first eight chapters represent a comfortable load. The content of a second course has many possibilities. One possibility is to combine Chapters 8 and 9 with Chapter 10, 11, or 12. As can be seen from the figure, many options exist for including the material in the last five chapters. For a full year course, all fourteen chapters can be covered. One of the changes made in this third edition is that the optimal control material no longer depends on the least-squares development in the system identification chapter, thus allowing for more flexibiltiy in the sequence of teaching. It has been found at Stanford that it is very useful to supplement the lecturers with laboratory work to enhance learning. A very satisfactory complement of laboratory equipment is a digital computer having an A/D and a D/A converter, an analog computer (or equivalent) with ten operational amplifiers, a digital storage scope, and a CAD package capable fo performing the basic computations and plotting graphs. A description of the laboratory equipment and experiments at Standord is described in Franklin and Powell, Control Systems Magazine(1989). There are many important topics in crontrol that we have not been able to include in this book. There is, for example, no discussion of mu analysis or design, linear matrix inequalitits, or convex optimization. It is our expectation, however, that careful study of theis book will provide the sutdent engineer with a sound basis for design of sampled-data controls and a foundation for the study of these and many other advanced topics in this most exciting field. As do all authors of technical works, we wish to acknowledge the vast array of contibutors on whose work our own presentaiton is based. I wanted to buy this book for a long time. It's just great, plain and full of examples

I'am primarily a VLSI design engineer who is working on a product involving digital control. The book by Franklin and co. helped me get off to a quick start. It has a lot of practical examples which will be useful to engineers. It teaches the underlying theory , proposes a method to solve problems and also gives the appropriate MATLAB commands. However , personally I'am not able to get a solid grasp of the material by reading this book alone. For a more complete and rigorous coverage I recommend Discrete Control by Benjamin Kuo.

Excellent!

Like many other reviews, I have not had problems with this book. It is very clear. I really liked the presentation of system identification methods which is something that distinguishes it from other digital control texts.

This book is a refere for Control Engineers that works with digital control, discretized systems and sampled-timed control. I really recommend this book! Easy lenguage and with an wide comprisement of the subject.

I like it, it is very cheap. It is a very useful book. It is the same as my classmate's.

This is a very nice introduction to the topic of sampled-data control systems. On the positive side, the authors often appeal to the reader's feeling for engineering problems. This is very useful and serves as a motivation for students in general. The discussions are clear, nomenclature is not hard to follow and there are plenty of worked examples. The book covers discretization effects and design by emulation (i.e. design of continuous-time control system followed by discretization before implementation) which are not to be found on every book on digital control. On the negative side is the organization of the material. It is not clear what kind of path the authors have in mind. Also there are omissions that are hard to justify. This thick book, when it comes to determining the stability of a characteristic polynomial in the z variable, just says that the bilinear transformation can be used in conjunction with the Routh-Hurwitz criterion. None of Jury's stability tests are described at all (I wonder if it is because Jury was Franklin's colleague during their doctorates...). The book is crowded with references in the text that are not to be found in the list of references. If you are interested in the modified z transform, you must choose another book. Coming back to the positive side, the chapter on control systems design in the frequency domain is a great exposition on the philosophy of control design, clear, thorough (the author even mention Bode's integral, a rare thing to do nowadays) and provides lots of insight in what concerns robustness. In summary, a great book, but as an introductory text-book it lacks some key-topics.

Generally an excellent book with many worked examples. Unfortunately there seem to be a few irritating errors. One error concerns section 13.3.1. The cost function in this example is set for a bandwidth of 1Hz. This is also indicated in Figure 13.70. However, the parameters a,b given in Figure 13.71 (and those found by the search algorithm) are correct for a bandwidth value of 10Hz. Incidentally, the third edition (student edition) of the book seems to be made of thinner paper than the second edition. I feel the book makes rather too much of quantisation effects and sample rate selection. It might be better to replace these chapters with a new chapter on model predictive control.
